1. ROUTE 131 ROAD CONSTRUCTION/91 BRIDGE: Week of June 14th: VTrans did not send update information yesterday. It will be posted to the Cavendish VT Facebook page as soon as it’s received. With school closing on June 17th, work will now begin in Proctorsville.. The Cavendish Historical Society is working with Pike Industries to have the villages areas designated “No vibe zones” thereby helping to reduce potential structural damage to buildings.
RT 131: Have questions about the 131 project, check out the VTrans handout Note that this link includes the contact information if you have questions or concerns about the project.
2. CAVENDISH INFO
• Black River Water Testing: Have yet to receive results from Wednesday’s testing. Black River Action Team will now be testing Knapp Pond this summer. When visiting Greven or the Gorge area in Cavendish, or any of the sites on the Black River being tested, please check the chart posted on-site to get a sense of the trends. Look for consistency in the numbers and stay out of the water for 24 hours after a heavy rain or any time it appears cloudy.
• Beat the Heat in Cavendish: With the high heat this past week, it’s good to have a plan in place for the hot summer days ahead. Check out Beat the Heat in Cavendish, which has lots of tips on keeping cool. Is there interest in having some neck coolers available? If interested in making them or needing one, e-mail cavendishconnects@gmail.com as we do have the material needed for the insert.
• 11 th Annual Cavendish Town Wide tag Sale: A month and a half away, please let us know if you’d like your location included on the webpage. The more information you provide, the better the sales. Two weeks prior to the event, which is July 31 from 9-2, we will begin to post pictures of items vendors have for sale. If you normally set up on 131, unless you have ample parking available, please consider using one of the town greens that are free for Cavendish residents, property owners and businesses. FMI
• Cavendish Community Fund (CCF) Awards Three Grants: CCF has awarded grants to the following: Windsor County Mentors ($500) to defray the cost of expanding and growing collaboration with local schools, particularly in Cavendish; Cavendish Community and Conservation Association ($400) to help with costs for the Svec Memorial Green summer concert series; and Streetscapes ($1,000) to help pay for the beautification of Proctorsville by installing flower boxes on the side rails of the new Depot St. Bridge.
• Vermont is facing its biggest gypsy moth outbreak in decades
3. BROADBAND-LINE EXTENSION CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: If you have neighbors with Broadband (e.g. Comcast) but it’s currently not available at your address, check out the state’s Line Extension Customer Assistance Program (LECAP) that started accepting applications from consumers on June 9.
In 2020, LECAP provided up to $3,000 in grants to over 250 qualifying and eligible Vermonters (over $540,000 total) who wished to extend telecommunications lines to their homes. The program was designed to help pay for buildout of service to Vermonters lacking 25/3 Mbps broadband service and who live just beyond the reach of current cable or Internet Service Providers’ (ISP) networks.
4. CAVENDISH VILLAGE GHOST WALK: The Dutton House that once sat on the Cavendish Village Green, was considered so haunted, the locals avoided it. In 1950, the spirits seemed to go with the house when it was relocated to Shelburne Museum. Today it’s considered Champlain Valley’s most haunted place as museum staff and volunteers have talked about a man, children and other specters that seem to haunt the place. As a result, many prefer not to work in there.
On June 19 (Saturday), the Cavendish Historical Society (CHS) will be hosting a “ghost walk” of Cavendish Village, where “haunts” and places of “exceptional human experiences” (EHE) will be visited. The tour begins at 8 pm in front of the CHS Museum (1951 Main St., Route 131 in Cavendish). Wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight.
The tour is free and open to the public. CHS welcomes all stories relating to houses and places in Cavendish and Proctorsville. FMI: margocaulfield@icloud.com or 802-226-7807
5. COVID UPDATE: Cavendish had no new Covid cases this past week and remains at 30 total. As of June 10, vaccinations of Cavendish residents 12+, with at least one dose, is listed as 61-70.% Note that there is room for error in these numbers as this is based on mailing addresses as an indicator of where people live.
The state needs a little over 2,000 people 12 + to be vaccinated in order to reach the 80% number for reopening the state. Vaccinations have slowed way down. With all of the walk in clinics scheduled over the weekend, maybe Monday will be “opening day.”
With an 80% vaccination rate, and the reopening of VT, masking and social distancing will be encouraged but not required. There will be no restriction on gatherings or capacities. Masking restrictions on public transit, schools and child care settings will remain in place for the time being. Business have the option of enforcing masking. Please respect businesses and towns that continue to require masking and comply.
According to Tuesday’s modeling cases are down 94% since April 1 and 17% since last week. The median age of those infected is now 25. The average age of hospitalizations in May dropped to 51.2 from 66.5 in January. VT is number one nationally for doses administered per 100,000 and is on track to be the first state to achieve 80% vaccination of those 12+.
UVM will require all students, full time and part time, to be vaccinated for the fall semester.
VT identified the Delta variant of Covid, first identified in India and 40% more transmissible than the original variant, back in May. The variant does not appear to have spread in VT. Early research indicates that the vaccines provide some protection against the Delta variant. Widespread vaccination is key, according to Dr. Faucci, to keep it in check.
Vaccinations: Find the closest walk in clinics (no appointments necessary) on-line; make an appointment for your free vaccine on-line or call 855-722-7878. The VDH Facebook page also provides notifications of pop up and walk in clinics.
