Black River Water Testing for 5/30/18: The sites on the Black River in Cavendish all tested clean for swimming and boating on May 30 (Wednesday). These sites include Greven Field (70 CFU) and the Cavendish Gorge (68 CFU). Nearby sites also testing fine for recreational use include: Buttermilk Falls (54 CFU), Little Ascutney Rd (70 CFU), Tolles Dam 5 CFU), and Downers Covered Bridge on Upper Falls Rd (5 CFU). Please note that it is recommended to stay out of the rivers and lakes within 24 hours of a heavy rain, or anytime the water looks cloudy, as Ecoli levels can be a lot higher at these times. The EPA’s upper limit for swimming is 235 CFU. Thank you Black River Action Team (BRAT) for providing us with this invaluable service. Rural Cell Service Down in Key Areas After Landline Carrier Cuts Access: A company trying to expand cellular telephone coverage in rural Vermont may have suffered a fatal blow with a decision by the state’s largest landline carrier to cut off Vanu CoverageCo’s access to most of its network. The service disruption left several parts of the state without the ability of residents and motorists to call 911 in an emergency during the three-day weekend that marks the traditional start to the summer travel season. Included were stretches of U.S. Route 302 in eastern Vermont, and state Routes 100, 107 and 125 in the central Green Mountains, among others. VT Digger
