1. TECH CAFE-MAY 14: Cavendish Connects and the Cavendish Library are co-sponsoring the first ever “Cavendish Tech Cafe” on May 14 (Tuesday from 6-8 pm) at the Library in Proctorsville. Bring your smart phone, laptop, tablet (iPad) to learn how to use them as well as how to use Facebook, Instagram and other social media sites. For those bringing devices, be sure they are well charged and/or bring power cable just in case. This is a free and open to the community event. FMI: cavendishconnects@gmail.com or 802-226-7807.

Thursday 5-16-19: Continue final Bonded wearing course machine paving in Chester, VT working towards Ludlow village. - This will include lots of trucks; Line Striping Targets (LST) will be used for temporary line delineation; Temporary 40 MPH speed reduction package from route 10 in Chester to Ludlow, Cavendish town line; Begin bridge plug joints in Chester, VT just north of route 10, and continue to Shrewsbury, VT.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection: There will be a household hazardous waste collection on Wednesday, May 15 at the Springfield Transfer Station, 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for residents of Andover, Athens, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Ludlow, Plymouth, Reading, Rockingham, Springfield, Weathersfield, West Windsor, and Windsor. Sponsored by the Southern Windsor/Windham Counties Solid Waste Management District and the host town. Chester Telegraph Claims TRSU Board Violated State Open Meeting Law: In a complaint dated May 7 and sent to Two Rivers Supervisory Union Superintendent (TRSU) Meg Powden, board chair Paul Orzechowski, and copied to board members and Chris Winters, Vermont Deputy Secretary of State, Cynthia Prairie, editor and publisher of The Chester Telegraph, is contending that the board of the SU improperly entered into an executive session even after it was warned that it was doing so illegally. This is not the first time The Telegraph has filed a complaint about the board violating Vermont’s Open Meeting Law. This law allows “public bodies” like select boards and school boards to meet in private but only under specific circumstances. At the May 2 TRSU board meeting, board members did not appear to understand why they were being called into an executive session, nor did the nature of the item to be discussed, “labor relations” met the criteria for exemption. When questioned about the executive session, Powden stated that they weren’t obligated to give any further information, then what appeared on the agenda. The Telegraph believes that it was not cited properly and Powden’s refusing to answer violated at least the spirit of the law that says that the board must “indicate the nature of the business of the session.” The Telegraph’s written letter to the TRSU Superintendent and Board chair is available here, while the article appears at The Telegraph’s website.
TRSU May 2 Board Meeting: At the May 2, Two Rivers Supervisory Union (TRSU), the board approved a job description for Meg Powden, Superintendent, and looked at a Non-bargaining Personnel handbook draft, which would equalize days off for employees doing the same job across districts. Okemo Valley TV Seeking Board Nominations: The annual Board of Directors election is coming up in June. Would you or someone you know be a good candidate to help local profit, independent, & local public media grow and thrive? Any resident of Andover, Ludlow, Mount Holly, Plymouth, Reading, or Cavendish who is at least 18 years of age is eligible to serve on the Board. Multiple seats are available. Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive: On Saturday, May 11, the National Association of Letter Carriers together with other partners is hosting its 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Postal carriers in Cavendish will be participating. Please leave your bag of food donations at your mailbox on Saturday before your letter carrier arrives. In Cavendish, a bin will be set up in the post office to receive donations. The food will be collected and distributed to Black River Good Neighbor Services. Some nonperishable items that are very good choices include canned meat, canned fish, canned fruit and vegetables, box meals, canned soups and chili, boxed or bagged cereal, peanut butter, and coffee. Please do not leave outdated products, home-canned good, or perishable items.
4. CHS PLANT SALE CHANGED TO MAY 25: Since it was started, the Cavendish Historical Society’s (CHS) annual plant sale has been held the Saturday before the 4th of July. However, as a result of Town Garage fire (Feb. 2017), the Museum's water supply was adversely impacted.
As the expression goes, "Vermont has two seasons, winter and the 4th of July." Last year’s plant sale was on one of the hottest days in the summer and it was difficult protecting plants from the sun and keeping them hydrated. The decision was made to avoid that by switching the weekend to the Saturday of Memorial Day, which many think of as the planting weekend anyway.
To that end CHS’s annual plant sale will take place on May 25, Saturday, from 9-2 in front of the Museum (Route 131 in Cavendish). The plant list, with new information being added, is available at the CHS Blog. Some plants can be pre ordered including the tomato plants.

• Dr. Gene Bont’s Celebration of Life will be held at Gethsemane Church Parish Hall from 2-4 pm. The church is located off Depot St. in Proctorsville.

SEPTEMBER 14 (SATURDAY): VT Golden Honey Festival. 10-4 Part craft fair, part food festival, the VT Golden Honey Festival is a community favorite. Located on the lawn of the Golden Stage Inn, 399 Depot St. in Proctorsville. Proceeds of this event will benefit VT Coalition of Runaway and Homeless Youth (Ludlow and Proctorsville.
